Your Opportunity:
The incumbent in this Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) position is responsible for coordinating, assigning, supervising, teaching, and participating in prioritization and facilitation of Edmonton Zone orthopedic injury - perioperative patient care; and collaboration/ coordination of a multidisciplinary team. The AHN will use their orthopedic clinical expertise to guide other members of the clinical teams in orthopedic & cast clinics and operating rooms while working closely with the orthopedic surgery lead, orthopedic trauma physicians, zone operational leaders, and RAAPID North, to facilitate care throughout Edmonton zone. The role will include developing a zone process with key stakeholders. process implementation, education, admissions, transfers, surgery booking and discharge planning. The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) is responsible for the team’s compliance with safety and best practices of care within the ‘specialty unit.’ The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) acts as a clinical leader for team members and is responsible for the daily coordination of patient care activities in the orthopedic services including operating rooms and orthopedic assessment clinics, as well as assigned to overall operative services leadership activities. The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) is accountable for the resources required for the specialty patient care as well as confirms team members have all the necessary supplies, instruments, and implants. Utilizes critical thinking strategies and conflict resolution skills to facilitate safe patient care.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing. 5-10 years recent acute care surgery or emergency department experience required, with 5-year charge nurse experience required. At least 5-year orthopedic surgery experience required. Quality improvement experience and strong communication skills required. Strong communication skills. Ability to balance numerous demands and conflicting priorities. Work within a team environment and effectively contribute to planning processes. Experience in collaborative care required. Proficient understanding of patient and surgical flow processes. Demonstrated excellent assessment, organizational, and patient care skills. Ability to communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Connect Care training, excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office - outlook, teams, excel and word. Demonstrate minimum typing speed 50 words per minute.
