Job Description
About AirMetal
AirMetal Robotics is a Canadian defense-tech company building the next generation of unmanned aerial systems, autonomous robotics, and related technologies for defense, law enforcement, first responder, security, and industrial customers. We develop novel UAV concepts that push the boundaries of what unmanned systems can do — and we move fast. We are a small, technical team that values engineering depth, ownership, and the ability to go from idea to hardware quickly.
The Role
We are opening a new fixed-wing UAV program and are looking for a mechanical engineer to lead the propulsion work. This is a full-time 4-month contract starting immediately. You will be responsible for the engine, propulsion system, and fuel system design for a fixed-wing UAV platform from concept through to a functional, testable prototype. This is hands-on work with real hardware.
What You Will Work On
- Engine selection, sizing, and integration for a fixed-wing UAV propulsion system
- Mechanical design of engine mount, propeller interface, and drivetrain components
- Fuel system design including tank sizing and geometry, fuel delivery, containment, and line routing
- Propulsion system performance analysis (thrust, fuel consumption, and thermal management)
- Integration of the propulsion system with the broader airframe architecture
- Test planning and support for bench and ground run testing of the propulsion system
- Support preparation of technical documentation required for flight authorization and airworthiness submissions
What We Are Looking For
- Degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering
- 2+ years of hands-on propulsion system design experience
- Experience with gas engines in UAV or small aircraft applications
- Familiarity with boxer or horizontally opposed engine configurations (preferred)
- Experience with fixed-wing UAV platforms (strongly preferred)
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving small team environment where scope evolves and initiative is expected
- Able to work full time on-site in Ottawa
Nice to Have
- Background in fuel system design (bladder tanks, fuel lines, and delivery systems)
- Experience taking a propulsion system from concept through bench test to flight test
- Familiarity with Transport Canada RPAS regulations or military UAV airworthiness standards
What We Offer
- Paid contract engagement with clearly defined scope and milestones
- Real ownership of meaningful work in a fast-growing drone technology company
- The opportunity to work at the frontier of drone technology
