Job Title: General Laborer – Winder / Machine Support

Job Description

This role supports production by safely handling roofing material rolls, assisting with machine operations, and maintaining accurate production records. You will remove rolls from the conveyor, prepare and stage them for production, help start and stop the machine, and ensure line speed and product quality remain consistent throughout your shift.

Responsibilities

  • Remove rolls from the conveyor belt and stack them neatly and safely according to established procedures.
  • Assist in lacing, starting, and stopping the machine to run material through the production line.
  • Maintain correct line speed to support efficient and consistent production.
  • Inspect rolls for defects, perform basic repairs, and stage rolls to be run on the machine.
  • Prepare rolls for production by bringing them from the storage area to the line.
  • Remove damaged or “busted” edges from rolls using a sheet stripper.
  • Sand and smooth roll edges using a sanding wheel or similar grinding tool to ensure proper quality.
  • Stage prepared rolls so the machine can run without unnecessary interruptions.
  • Record all required information for dry felt rolls used during the shift on a daily basis.
  • Document all paper breaks and machine downtime on the Lost Productivity Record.
  • Perform general cleaning of the work area to maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Stack, count, and organize finished or in-process materials as needed to support production flow.

Essential Skills

  • Experience performing general labor tasks in a production, construction, roofing, or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to operate or assist with operating production machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Comfort using power tools such as sheet strippers and sanding or grinding equipment.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude to support machine lacing, starting, and stopping.
  • Ability to perform stacking, counting, and organizing of materials accurately.
  • Record-keeping skills to accurately document material usage, paper breaks, and downtime.
  • Ability to work safely around running machines and forklifts in a busy manufacturing setting.
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift and move rolls, and work in a non-climate-controlled environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a machine operator or machine helper in a production facility.
  • Background in roofing materials, construction, or related industrial work.
  • Attention to detail when inspecting materials and preparing rolls for production.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and adhere to production procedures.
  • Strong focus on safety and housekeeping, including general cleaning of the work area.

Work Environment

This position is based in a manufacturing facility that produces roofing materials. The environment includes running production machines and active forklift traffic, requiring consistent attention to safety. Due to the nature of the product, the facility has a strong asphalt smell and is not climate controlled, which means it can be hot during the summer months. The typical schedule includes a mix of 12-hour and 8-hour shifts: Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. During a seasonal period from the end of January into February, operations run Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For 12-hour shifts, employees receive two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch break. On 8-hour days, employees receive one 15-minute break and one 30-minute lunch break. The role involves working on the production floor around industrial equipment, with appropriate workwear suitable for a manufacturing setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chambersburg, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $16.75 - $17.99/hr.
