Job Description
Role: Account Manager (Accounts Payable & Payroll)
Location: Washington, DC
Schedule: Hybrid
Compensation: $50 – $60 / hour
Type: Long-Term Contract (6+ months)

About the Opportunity
A well-established, mission-driven organization in Washington, DC is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee Accounts Payable and Payroll operations. This role is open due to a long-tenured team member's upcoming retirement and offers the opportunity to lead a dedicated team while supporting critical financial operations.
The position will primarily focus on Accounts Payable leadership while maintaining oversight of payroll processes. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on manager who can operate independently, communicate proactively with leadership, and provide strong support to both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Accounts Payable Leadership
- Oversee the full accounts payable function and supervise a team of accounting professionals.
- Manage the complete AP lifecycle, including invoice processing, coding, approvals, vendor maintenance, reconciliations, accruals, and month-end close activities.
- Review and approve electronic payments, ACH transactions, wire transfers, and check runs.
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of payments while maintaining strong internal controls.
- Monitor vendor relationships and resolve escalated payment issues.
Payroll Oversight
- Supervise bi-weekly payroll processing for multiple employee groups.
- Partner closely with payroll administration, HR, and external providers to ensure payroll accuracy and compliance.
- Assist with payroll process improvements and documentation updates.
- Support payroll tax compliance and issue resolution.
Cash Management & Financial Operations
- Assist leadership with cash flow monitoring and payment forecasting.
- Maintain visibility into outgoing cash activity and proactively communicate key updates.
- Support funding management and financial reporting requirements.
Credit Card & Travel Program Oversight
- Review and oversee employee credit card programs and travel-related financial processes.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies and financial controls.
Audit & Compliance
- Support annual financial statement audits and auditor requests.
- Oversee payroll tax, sales tax, and 1099 compliance activities.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Recommend and implement process improvements and internal control enhancements.
Team Leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
- Assign work, monitor performance, and provide ongoing coaching and support.
- Foster a collaborative, customer-service-oriented team environment.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of combined Accounts Payable and Payroll experience.
- 3+ years of supervisory or management experience leading accounting teams.
- Strong hands-on payroll experience.
- Experience managing the full accounts payable function.
- Knowledge of payroll taxes, sales tax, and 1099 reporting requirements.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining proactive communication with leadership.
- Strong customer service and conflict-resolution skills.
