Special Needs Educational Assistant
Position Overview
Tamil Community Services for Special Needs (TCSSN) is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Special Needs Educational Assistant to support learners in both classroom and community-based settings.
The ideal candidate is patient, caring, and passionate about working with individuals with autism and other special needs. This role involves supporting students in academic, social, and life skills development while promoting independence, inclusion, and overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Support learners during academic, recreational, life skills, and classroom activities, including lunch and community-based programs
- Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning concepts under the supervision of the teacher or program supervisor
- Assist students using strategies such as visual supports, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), prompting techniques, structured routines, and basic sign language
- Support the development of communication, social skills, self-regulation, and community integration
- Implement behaviour support plans using positive reinforcement and inclusive practices
- Ensure safety and provide supervision in classrooms, outdoor activities, yoga sessions, physical programs, and community outings
- Monitor and document student progress, including data collection and observation reporting
- Assist with personal care routines (e.g., toileting) and supervise students during meals and daily routines
- Communicate respectfully and professionally with learners, caregivers, staff, and supervisors
- Assist with the setup and use of audio-visual equipment, including projectors and video tools
Requirements
- Experience working with children or adults with special needs (autism experience is an asset)
- Educational background in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Developmental Services Worker (DSW), Child and Youth Worker (CYW), or related field preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work patiently and effectively in a team environment
- Understanding of behaviour management strategies and inclusive practices
- Ability to follow structured programs and behaviour support plans
- Passion for supporting individuals with special needs and promoting independence

Technical Competencies
- Basic knowledge of visual supports and communication tools (PECS, schedules, etc.)
- Ability to collect and record data accurately
- Familiarity with classroom and program support tools and resources
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office and simple documentation tools)
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $17.60 per hour
Work Location: In person
