Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Linux Systems Administrator SME to support mission-critical, large-scale computing environments. This role focuses on administering, automating, securing, and optimizing Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)–based HPC systems used to support advanced scientific, engineering, and research workloads. The ideal candidate brings deep Linux internals expertise, strong scripting skills, and the ability to troubleshoot complex system-level issues in secure, multi-platform environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Automate day-to-day system administration, debugging, and operational tasks
- Create system backups and manage long-term storage using tape-based solutions
- Provide one-on-one technical support to users to resolve access and system issues
- Install and maintain software libraries in RHEL/SELinux environments using Bash and Expect scripting based on standardized templates
- Apply best practices in software engineering to deliver high-quality solutions on time
- Support security and administration teams as well as end users to resolve system and access issues
- Modify and enhance existing scripts to correct errors and improve performance
- Provide SME-level Linux support to operations and maintenance staff
- Debug Linux kernel issues by analyzing source code, system logs, and using tools such as crash and systemtap
- Manage Satellite repositories to apply patches and build custom kernels to support functionality and security requirements
- Automate system configuration and maintenance activities using Ansible and Satellite Server
- Create, maintain, and update comprehensive technical documentation across all supported environments
- Support identity management systems, including LDAP and token-based authentication mechanisms
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AIS, or related field plus 10 years of experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience developing system software in heterogeneous, multi-platform environments
- Proficiency in Bourne/Bash and Expect scripting
- Hands-on experience debugging Linux kernel issues using source code analysis, logs, crash, and systemtap
- Experience managing Satellite repositories, patching systems, and building custom kernels
- Experience automating system configuration and patching using Ansible and Satellite Server
- Understanding and hands-on experience with identity management systems including LDAP and token-based authentication
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Active TS//SCI with CI Poly clearance required
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in High Performance Computing (HPC) environments
- Familiarity with high-speed fabrics such as InfiniBand or Omni-Path, including subnet management, IPoIB/IPoOPA, topology, health monitoring, and MPI integration
- Experience with Lustre, NFS, and other direct-attached file systems
- Experience with Ethernet networking and RDMA communications (InfiniBand, Omni-Path)
- Knowledge of Python, Perl, Korn, and other shell scripting languages
- Experience using revision control tools such as CVS, SVN, or Git
- SELinux configuration and policy management experience
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, debug, and maintain large existing scripting codebases
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and balance competing workloads
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong documentation, time management, and collaboration skills
