The Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Woodland Wellness Centre is inviting applications for the following Full-Time Term position based out of La Ronge, SK:
Garden Worker
The suitable candidate will be able to perform the following duties:
- Manage WWC’s in-house Food Sovereignty initiative, ensuring alignment with Woodland Cree traditional practices and healing objectives;
- Plan and manage the growth of traditional medicines, vegetables, and other plants within the greenhouse and garden;
- Develop and deliver educational workshops for participants, teaching them gardening skills and fostering a connection to the land;
- Collaborate with participants and staff to integrate gardening as part of the healing journey and promote sustainable living practices;
- Facilitate to maintain the Greenhouse infrastructure and ensure its operation aligns with the WWC’s goals;
- Maintaining accurate records and documentation, such as watering schedules, planting dates, inventory logs, and basic crop or greenhouse notes, as required;
- Participate in Food Sovereignty meetings;
- Some travel may be required to LLRIB outlying communities to help support community-based Food Sovereignty initiatives;
- Planting, transplanting, potting, and spacing plants;
- Watering, fertilizing, pruning, and general plant care;
- Monitoring plant health and reporting pests, disease, or stress;
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization of greenhouse and garden areas;
- Assisting with soil preparation, weeding, and bed maintenance;
- Loading, unloading, and moving plants, supplies, and equipment;
- Supporting seasonal tasks such as harvesting, storing, preserving, and distributing produce;
- Following safety procedures and proper use of tools and equipment;
- Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
The suitable candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Completion of a 2-3 year college program in agronomy, arboriculture, horticulture, landscaping, landscape design or landscape technology is preferred;
- Experience in gardening, horticulture, or agriculture;
- A combination of education and experience will be considered;
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, standing, and working in warm or outdoor conditions;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Positive attitude and respect for plants, coworkers, and clients/participants;
- Experience working with First Nations communities and knowledge of Woodland Cree culture & traditions is an asset;
- Must have a Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and own a reliable vehicle;
- Must provide a satisfactory and recent; Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, & SGI Driver’s Abstract.
