Role Overview: As a Research Associate - Data Scientist in Ecosystem Science at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales, you will contribute to research at the interface between ecological sciences and environmental data science. Your main responsibility will be to develop and refine reproducible workflows for ecosystem-specific indicators as part of the ARDC funded Ecosystem Indicators Workflows project. You will collaborate with a core team and external partners to conduct research aimed at enhancing the quality of research outcomes in the discipline area. Key Responsibilities: - Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research to enhance research outcomes. - Develop ecosystem-specific indicator workflows under the guidance of a research leader. - Provide expertise in ecological and/or data science to workflow design and testing. - Support data transformation, harmonisation, and metadata development. - Collaborate with research software engineers to implement software tools for reproducible research. - Assist in documentation, elaboration of case studies, and example applications. - Support training activities, community events, and dissemination of research outcomes. - Participate in discipline-appropriate research activities, conferences, workshops, and supervision of research students. - Align with the Code of Conduct and Values, and adhere to health and safety policies and procedures. Qualifications Required: - PhD in ecology, environmental science, or conservation science, or a relevant Masters/Honours degree in data science with industry or research experience. - Knowledge and experience in computer science and coding. - Proficiency in mathematics and statistics. - Commitment to staying updated with domain and technical knowledge. - Track record of research outputs relative to opportunity. - Ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships. - Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with stakeholders and students. - Understanding of UNSWs aims, objectives, values, and health and safety responsibilities.
