General Purpose This is an opportunity to work at the Agriculture and Food Laboratory (AFL), a laboratory partner for government and universities in Canada for agriculture, food safety, and animal health testing, and a leader in providing high-value analytic and diagnostic services to the private sector in selected niche markets. As a values‑based organization with the mission of working together toward a healthier future and improving life, we are searching for a Laboratory Technician in our Molecular Biology Laboratory who supports the Division’s values: Client Centered, Integrity, Individuals Matter, Shared Responsibility, and Committed to Evolving.
Duties And Responsibilities The DNA Analysis Laboratory Technician performs highly technical and complex test procedures in the Molecular Biology Laboratory to provide professional analytical services in DNA sequencing, DNA synthesis, DNA fingerprinting, eDNA testing, and various other types of genetic analyses using established laboratory methods for a wide range of clients. Additional duties include processing client samples, performing routine and non‑routine molecular‑based assays, including validation/verification of new analytical techniques, generating accurate and timely analytical results, communicating with clients, maintaining equipment, QC/QA records, and ensuring a safe working environment according to established laboratory protocols and ISO 17025 requirements.
The Molecular Biology Laboratory is fast‑paced and highly collaborative. Candidates who bring a positive and service‑focused attitude and thrive managing multiple tasks and working within a team will be most successful in this role.
Requirements
BSc in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Life Sciences or related discipline (MSc in Molecular Biology preferred) plus demonstrated laboratory experience in molecular methods, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Good understanding of molecular methods used in agriculture, food, and environmental analyses.
Proficiency in Sanger and NGS DNA sequencing, DNA synthesis, DNA fingerprinting, eDNA analysis, and other types of genetic analyses.
Excellent bench work skills with a record of high‑quality DNA analysis results.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Proven experience working in an ISO organization.
Thorough understanding of QA/QC protocols.
