Role Overview
The successful incumbent will meet the requirements of the position description for “Registered Nurse” and act as a team member with specific responsibility for performance of professional nursing care to a patient or group of patients as assigned. As a member of the multi-disciplinary team, the OR RN performs duties as practiced in accordance with the ORNAC standards for perioperative nursing and NAPANc standards for peri‑anesthesia care.
Qualifications / Requirements
- Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS required.
- Minimum 3 years recent clinical experience in Critical Care Area (ED, ICU, or Surgical Services) required.
- Recent clinical experience in the OR or PACU/ Day Surgery within the last 2 years required.
- Completion of a ORNAC certified Perioperative and a NAPANc certified Peri-Anesthesia course required.
- Ability to take on-call on a rotating basis is required—must be within 20 minutes driving distance from Hospital.
- The staff will respond to the call immediately and be prepared for the surgery within 30 minutes of receiving the call (NPR-X010).
- Demonstrated excellent organization and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Critical thinking ability.
- Thorough understanding of the Surgical Safety Checklist.
- Flexibility in work hours.
- Participation in committee work or task groups.
- Able to work in PACU and the Day Surgery areas.
- Competent in necessary special skills including initiating I.V., delegated medical acts including defibrillation and administration of life‑saving medications.
Physical Effort and Working Conditions
- Ability to work in an active, rapidly changing, stressful environment with multiple demands.
- Ability to make decisions and prioritize effectively.
- Ability to focus on complex instructions and tasks in an environment with many distractions.
- Intense visual concentration required for processing doctor’s orders, carrying out medication administration routines and interpreting electronic physiological monitoring equipment.
- Physical ability to lift, pull, push, carry, reach and support patients with assistance, as required.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time with repetitive bending.
Employment Requirements
- Successful applicants must provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, within one year of hire, completed within the first 60 days of employment.
- Successful applicants must complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up‑to‑date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first 30 days of employment.
