Position Summary: As part of the Process Engineering team, Process Engineer - Studies & Development is responsible for developing concepts and engineering deliverables for reliability, lifecycle, improvement and growth projects. This role will work closely with process engineers, project engineers, laboratory specialists, discipline engineers, operations and reliability teams in carrying out process studies and developmental work.
This position will collaborate with fellow process engineers and external contractors to deliver timely and cost-effective results.
Responsibilities
- Acts as Process Engineering Services (PES) focal for assigned process studies;
- Works with unit contact engineers and principal engineers closely in the development of problem definition and process studies;
- Collaborates with unit contact engineers and principal engineers in carrying out test runs for unit reliability and capacity improvements;
- Works with PES team members and Operations, Maintenance and Technical (OMT) teams as needed in the Identification of improvements and Problem threat and opportunity (PTO) development, technical scope development;
- Collaborates with EPC and NWR project teams in DBM development as well as support of FEED, detailed engineering for assigned projects;
- Develops contractor/EPC scope of work, providing timely technical clarifications and tracking progress and timekeeping;
- Develops in-house Conceptual study and DBMs providing economic justifications and technical inputs for cost estimations;
- Performs process calculations and simulations, including model building using data retrieved from plant, for plant troubleshooting and identifying constraints;
- Identifies project risks, collaborate to create pragmatic solutions and escalates technical deviations and roadblocks that require immediate attention;
- Ensures Engineering documentation is updated and heat & material balance remains current with the project;
- Lead/support root cause investigations as needed for project development and resolving operational issues;
- Champions Management of Change (MOC) for concepts and DBM; participate in HAZOP, SIL and other risk reviews as assigned;
- Serves backfill support or function as unit contact engineer or principal engineer as required;
- Supports the preparation of process scope for turnaround, review shutdown, startup, and standard operating procedures, participate in process inspection of equipment items;
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Understands, creates and maintains a visible commitment to process and personal safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR’s Core Competencies to drive results and a high performing culture;
- Chemical Engineering Degree and registered as professional engineer (P. Eng.) in the province of Alberta;
- 10-20 years of process engineering experience is sought which must include, minimum 5 years in refinery, upgrader, petrochemical operating facility in process engineering role;
- Experience in one or more of the following technologies is advantageous–Hydrocracking, gasification, LC fining;
- Intermediate to expert level experience in process simulation (PRO/II, ProMax, HTRI, FRNC-5). Experience in other equivalent industrial process simulations tools is advantageous and will be considered;
- Must be self-confident enough to seek assistance with difficult or complex issues;
- Willing to continuously and proactively collaborate, share, and seek information and guidance; Should be a valuable team player who works collaboratively with other departments;
- Ability to coach and mentor junior members and ability to make decisions, in line with the refinery philosophy and execution plans;
- Ability to lead projects and collaborate with multiple stakeholders and to indirectly lead and influence small teams;
- Must be well organized, a strategic thinker with an ability to recognize when detailed information is required and interpret that detail to evaluate project progress and issues;
