POSITION SUMMARY:

The Junior Accountant reports to the Controller and is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting functions of the organization, with a primary focus on accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance.

This role ensures the accurate and timely processing of financial transactions, supports vendor and employee expense processes, and assists with reconciliations and month-end activities. The Junior Accountant plays a key role in maintaining financial data integrity and responding to internal and external inquiries while supporting the broader accounting function as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage incoming invoices from vendors and sub trades (sorting, coding, distribution, and payment)
  • Manage the corporate visa expenses (download from bank, distribute to card holders, and enter the accounting system)
  • Manage employee personal expense e claims (verify approvals, enter in the accounting system)
  • Reconcile processed work by verifying entries and comparing system reports to
  • Charge expenses to accounts and cost centers by analyzing invoice/ expense reports, recording
  • Maintains accounting ledgers by verifying and posting account
  • Reports sales taxes by calculating requirements on paid
  • Reconcile accounts payable
  • Prepare analysis of accounts
  • Monitor accounts to ensure payments are up to
  • Research and resolve invoice discrepancies and
  • Assist with month end
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational
  • Provide supporting documentation for audits

HEALTH AND SAFETY:

Reads, understands, and follows MECI’s Corporate Health and Safety Program, Policy, and Procedures. Ensures that health and safety is considered in the performance of all activities, both on and off the job. Participation in Health & Safety initiatives will be monitored and reviewed as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 1-3 years of relevant accounting or bookkeeping experience
  • Experience working with accounting software and expense management systems (e.g., Concur or similar)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial processes

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
  • Knowledge of general ledger structure and transaction posting
  • Familiarity with bank reconciliations and account analysis
  • Awareness of standard financial controls and documentation practices
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and reconciliation
  • Organizational and time management skills to manage recurring deadlines (e.g., weekly, biweekly cycles)
  • Problem-solving skills to identify and resolve discrepancies in invoices, payments, and accounts
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for vendor and internal stakeholder interactions
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to work independently while following established processes and controls
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information
  • Ability to collaborate with internal teams to ensure timely approvals and submissions
  • Ability to learn new systems and processes quickly
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support ad hoc requests as required
