Job Title: Ottawa Bureau Chief (REF# JG34959) Location: Ottawa, Ontario Position Overview The Globe and Mail is seeking an enterprising journalist as our next Ottawa bureau chief. This is a leadership role for a seasoned reporter with a proven ability to break news, deliver high-impact exclusives, and set the political agenda. The successful candidate will combine sharp instincts with an endless drive to get scoops and hold those in power to account.
Reporting to the editor‑in‑chief and working with the politics editor, the bureau chief will strategize coverage in Ottawa and collaborate with beats across the newsroom on how best to tell those stories. In all of your work, you will be motivated by a central question: Is the government working for Canadians? This is a management position based in our Ottawa bureau and requires at least three days a week in the office.
Responsibilities Frequently deliver breaking news and exclusive stories Drive authoritative coverage from the bureau that shapes the national conversation Manage and mentor a team of reporters Collaborate with reporters and editors across the newsroom Represent the bureau publicly at events and appearances Salary The base salary for this role ranges from $117,000 to $146,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate’s level of experience, technical skills, and alignment with the role’s requirements. Candidates who have been identified as meeting the role’s requirements can expect to be near the midpoint of this range, while the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles.
This role may also be eligible for The Globe’s Annual Incentive Plan, which is based on a combination of company and individual performance.
