Position: Firefighter/EMT - Basic
Job Description
The purpose of this job is to respond to emergency calls; provide basic life support; engage in fire suppression, rescue and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue. This position works under general supervision of station officers, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Respond to emergency medical service calls, operate apparatus and administer patient care, transport patients to emergency care facilities for definitive care; observe patient responses; maintain accurate and complete prehospital patient care reports.
- Perform firefighting duties including operating fire apparatus, pumps and related equipment, and performing fire suppression, containment, and salvage and overhaul; lay and connect hoses; secure nozzles and direct streams; raise and climb ladders; use various types of extinguishing agents and other firefighting tools.
- Participate in activities and operations in response to natural disasters, major accidents, incidents involving hazardous materials, and other emergency situations.
- Participate in emergency rescue operations, including search and rescue, water rescue, elevated rescue, and other rescue operations.
- Check and restock the emergency response vehicles for proper equipment and supplies.
- Inspect, clean, test, and perform general maintenance work on vehicles, apparatus, equipment, station and grounds.
- Present programs to the community on safety and Fire/EMS prevention topics.
- Participate in training and instructional programs of technical material, scheduled drills and classes for various fire and/or EMS topics.
- Perform related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age, with successful completion and awarding of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

- Successfully complete a 20-23 week recruit school with extensive training in both emergency medical and fire services. Successful completion is regulated under the Crater Regional Academy.
Preferred Certifications
- Emergency Vehicle Operation I, II & III
- Virginia Certified Emergency Medical Technician
- Hazmat Awareness and Operations
Physical Demands
Strenuous work – frequently lifting 75 or more pounds, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, standing for prolonged periods, twisting and other required physical demands necessary for job duties.
Work Environment (Unavoidable Hazards)
- Dangerous work with the possibility of prolonged periods working in high heat, extreme weather conditions, varying heights
- Involves routine exposure to fire and smoke, and dangerous chemicals and poisonous gases.
- Involves exposure to biohazards, blood borne pathogens.
- Exposure to many unknown elements and materials that are unknown.
